Update: Carolina woman dies after being set alight

A man accused of setting his girlfriend on fire is due to again appear in court at the beginning of September.

A 22-year-old woman who had been fighting for her life in the hospital after being set on fire, allegedly by her boyfriend, died yesterday.

The accused, Innocent Sthembiso Maseko, appeared in the Carolina Magistrate’s Court yesterday and the case was postponed to September 4 for formal bail application.

According to SAPS provincial spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, Maseko allegedly poured flammable liquid on the woman and set her alight. Community members came to her aid.

The neighbours saw her in agony, engulfed in flames, while the man was allegedly still pouring liquid on her from a two-litre container.

When he realised that people were coming to her rescue, he fled the scene.

“The neighbours did their best to extinguish the fire and the woman was taken to hospital for medical treatment,” says Mdhluli.

Maseko was apprehended on the same day and first appeared in court on August 22.
