Unisa warns of a planned controlled implosion tomorrow

A controlled implosion will take place at the university's Sunnyside campus and has been approved by SAPS, TMPD, and the municipality.

Residents and business owners in the vicinity of the University of South Africa’s (Unisa) Sunnyside campus have been warned about a planned controlled implosion at the university.

The implosion will take place tomorrow morning between 06:30 and 07:30.

Those in the immediate vicinity are warned by the university to remain indoors during the implosion ‘as a safety precaution’.

“We would like to inform residents and business owners that there will be a controlled implosion taking place at the Unisa Sunnyside campus located at 243 Normaal Road in Pretoria,” the university says in a statement.

According to the statement, the implosion is a collaborative effort between SA Demolishers and Unisa.

All roads surrounding the site will be closed during the event to prevent any vehicles from being in the vicinity.

“The controlled implosion has been approved by SAPS, TMPD, and the municipality. We want to ensure you are aware of the event and the precautions being taken to ensure your safety,” says a spokesperson for the university

The university adds ground vibrations and noise levels will be monitored throughout the event, saying these are expected to be as ‘minor as planned’.
