Tragic Mpumalanga shooting claims 2 lives – toddler survives

A toddler strapped to his mother’s back survived a suspected murder–suicide that claimed two lives.

Emergency services responded to a tragic shooting in Thusi Village in Weselton, Mpumalanga, last night.

Highvelder reports that, according to a paramedic, they were dispatched at around 20:05 to a reported shooting in Hector Peterson Street, where they found two people dead from gunshot wounds.

The paramedic indicated that the incident appears to have been an alleged murder–suicide.

One of the deceased, a woman, had a young boy aged approximately two to three years old strapped to her back when she was shot.

Fortunately, the child was not struck by any bullets.

He was examined by EMS personnel and found to have no injuries.

The boy was initially cared for by a neighbour before being placed in the custody of SAPS.

“There were several eyewitnesses at the scene, many of who were deeply traumatised,” a paramedic said.

A young woman, aged 18, was transported by EMS to Ermelo Provincial Hospital for treatment and counselling.
