Tragic lightning strike claims mother and daughter near Sasolburg

A lightning strike in a Sasolburg informal settlement killed a mother and her five-year-old daughter, while a toddler was stabilised and survived.

A mother and her five-year-old daughter passed away after being struck by lightning in an informal settlement outside Sasolburg yesterday.

According to Sedibeng Ster, Vaal Emergency Care Private Ambulance Services reported that they received a distress call about a lightning strike involving a mother and two children in the informal settlement.

“After locating the scene, we assisted Free State EMS with stabilising a toddler who was carried by the mother when they were struck by lightning. Unfortunately, the mother and a five-year-old passed away due to extensive injuries,” the report said.
