Tragedy at Scottburgh beach as woman declared dead

Lifeguards and paramedics attempted resuscitation after a woman was found unresponsive at Scottburgh main beach on Easter Sunday.

A 21-year-old woman was found unresponsive and floating in the water at Scottburgh main beach yesterday.

According to South Coast Herald, lifeguards brought her ashore and CPR was initiated by lifeguards and members of the public before the arrival of first responders.

IPSS Medical Rescue arrived at the scene and continued with advanced life support resuscitation efforts.

Despite all efforts, the young woman was declared dead.

Municipal action and condolences

Umdoni Municipality temporarily banned bathing at Scottburgh beach after the tragedy and urged all residents and visitors to remain vigilant when swimming, adhere to safety guidelines and respect the instructions of lifeguards and emergency personnel.

Mayor Mbali Cele-Luthuli said the municipality would also offer assistance to the bereaved family should it be needed.

“Our thoughts are with them as they navigate this painful tragedy,” she said.

Police have yet to comment on the incident.
