Traffic officers nab motorist travelling at 194km/h on N1 near Modimolle

Limpopo authorities are cracking down on reckless driving across major routes following a string of extreme speeding incidents this month.

A driver was arrested after allegedly being caught travelling at 194km/h on the N1 near Sondela, Modimolle, this morning (October 26).

Polokwane Review reports the arrest brings to six the number of motorists arrested for speeding in Limpopo during October, according to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety.

Previous speeding arrests this month:

  • October 12: A motorist caught travelling at 175km/h
  • October 18: A motorist caught travelling at 181km/h
  • Last Monday: Two motorists arrested after allegedly travelling at 169km/h and 204km/h respectively
  • Last Tuesday: A driver arrested for allegedly travelling at 172km/h

In the latest incident, traffic officers stopped the driver and arrested him before taking him to the Bela-Bela Police Station, where he was detained.

Safer Festive Season Campaign

The arrest comes as Limpopo steps up road safety enforcement following the launch of the 2026/2027 Safer Festive Season Campaign on Thursday (October 22).

The campaign includes intensified operations targeting dangerous driving, with particular attention to speeding, drunk driving and unroadworthy vehicles on major routes, including the N1, R81, R524 and R71.

The department has warned that excessive speed increases the risk of serious and fatal crashes, urging motorists to obey speed limits and drive responsibly.

Traffic officers will maintain a visible presence on provincial roads as part of ongoing enforcement operations.

The department reiterated that reckless driving would not be tolerated and called on motorists to prioritise the safety of all road users.
