Toddler drowns in swollen Lowveld stream while following mom
A toddler who followed his mother without her noticing was swept away by a strong current.
Ongoing heavy rainfall in the Lowveld continues to leave destruction in its wake. The body of a two-year-old boy, Sibusiso Mnisi, was recovered yesterday from a stream in Msholozi section C, after he drowned.
Lowvelder reports that his mother, Thapiseng Mnisi, told police that her son was asleep inside their home. When she left the house, he reportedly followed her without being noticed. When the boy attempted to cross the stream after her, he was swept away by the strong current and drowned.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed that all relevant stakeholders were called to the scene, and emergency medical personnel declared the child dead. An inquest has been opened for further investigation.
The acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
He urges community members to exercise extreme caution, particularly during the current wet weather conditions, as streams, rivers and dams are overflowing and dangerous.
