Teenage girl among 2 arrested for Tzaneen robbery

Police are still searching for two of the four armed robbers who allegedly held up hitchhikers over the weekend.

A 16-year-old girl and a 23-year-old man will appear before the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court today on charges of robbery with a firearm and possession of suspected stolen property.

The duo, who were among a group of four, were arrested following an armed robbery on Saturday night in which two hitchhikers were robbed of their belongings at gunpoint.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the victims were hitchhiking on the R71 when a white Toyota Avanza stopped. Three men and a teenage girl were inside the vehicle.

“Along the way, the vehicle turned towards Bolobedu and the suspects [allegedly] pointed their firearms [at the victims] demanding cash. They then robbed the two women of their belongings, including cellphones, cash and jewellery.

“The suspects drove off and left the victims stranded,” says Ledwaba.

He adds that the victims were assisted by a passerby who immediately notified the police.

Investigations led to the arrest of two of the suspects within the vicinity.

“During the arrest, one [of the victims’ stolen] cellphones and nine other cellphones suspected to have been [stolen] were confiscated,” he says.

Police are searching for the other suspects.
