Teen dies in KZN hit-and-run accident

The 16-year-old was on his way home from visiting a friend when the accident happened.

Police in Amanzimtoti are investigating a case of culpable homicide after Quanu Rothwell (16) died after he was hit by a car in Winklespruit on the South Coast of KZN last weekend.

According to Dalene Heath of Toti Community Assist, Quanu was hit by a Toyota Tazz at around 17:23 on July 13 while on his way home after visiting a friend. Earlier reports had indicated that Quanu had been on his skateboard at the time of the accident.

“Emergency services responded, but there was nothing they could do for the young man. He was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Heath.

While the car fled the scene of the accident, the driver later handed himself over at the Amanzimtoti Police Station where he was charged. Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the incident and said the police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

A releasing of balloons ceremony was held on July 14 for Quano at Uitsig, which is where he grew up. Heath said a fundraiser has been started to assist Quanu’s parents with costs.
