Teacher, learners exchange blows at Johannesburg high school

A video showing a teacher and two learners engaging in a physical altercation using a chair and a desk has spread rapidly across social media.

On Thursday, a scuffle broke out in a classroom at Glenvista High School in Johannesburg South, involving two Grade 9 learners and a teacher exchanging blows.

The incident was caught on video and has gone viral on social media platforms.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) visited the school on Friday and launched an investigation to ascertain the details surrounding its cause.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said they take this matter seriously. The safety of everyone on the premises of schools remains their priority, and such ill-discipline will not be tolerated, Chiloane added.

“Schools are for development, not any other nefarious deeds. As such, we are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident, and we will act decisively on our findings,” said the MEC.
