Taxi strike brings chaos to Pretoria CBD
A South African National Taxi Council spokesperson says a strike in the capital is a result of taxis being impounded 'without prior notice'.
Some major roads in Pretoria CBD are closed today as a strike by taxi drivers has brought significant traffic disruptions to the city centre.
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) spokesperson, McDonald Makata, says the strike was sparked by taxis being impounded without prior notice by law enforcement.
He confirms that taxi drivers and owners had blocked major roads in the CBD.
“The strike began earlier today but was temporarily defused. However, I hear now that it has resumed near Tshwane House,” Makata adds.
According to the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), Madiba and Lillian Ngoyi streets have been closed. TMPD officers, along with other law enforcement agencies, are on the scene monitoring the situation.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes to avoid delays.
