Tavern double murder accused abandons bail in Evander court
A man accused of killing two men in their 20s on New Year’s Day will stay in custody during his trial.
Musonwabo Skweza (35) abandoned his bail application in the Evander Magistrate’s Court today.
Ridge Times reports that Skweza faces double murder charges following a shooting at a tavern in Embalenhle on January 1.
Arrest details
Skweza was traced and arrested on the morning of January 3.
He was arrested between Leandra and Devon in a joint operation by members of Crime Intelligence, Embalenhle Detective Services and Visible Policing, the Secunda Flying Squad, as well as Kinross SAPS.
Police reported that Skweza had likely hitchhiked to Gauteng and later received a lift from a private vehicle.
During the arrest, a firearm with ammunition and two magazines were recovered.
The serial number of the seized firearm had been filed off and police believe it may have been the weapon used in the murders.
Charges and victims
Skweza faces several charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as two counts of murder.
The victims were identified as Siyabonga Fortune Hlapo (25) and Ratile Motloung (24).
The case has been postponed to February 27.
