Suspected serial rapist arrested at Durban hostel

Ongoing police investigations have thus far linked an alleged serial rapist to 27 cases.

A 31-year-old alleged serial rapist was arrested during an early morning intelligence-led operation at a block of flats on Block J2 at the Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi, KZN, yesterday.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says police were acting on intelligence which uncovered the room in which the suspect was hiding. During his arrest, the suspect was found in possession of a cellphone belonging to a 26-year-old woman who he allegedly raped on Sunday night.

Netshiunda says the man enticed the woman on the internet and the two agreed to meet.

“Their first meet up led them to a sports ground at Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi where the suspect reportedly became aggressive and raped the victim at knife-point.

“After the rape ordeal, the suspect took the woman’s cellphone and only gave her the sim card.”

Netshiunda says the man was wanted for a series of rape and robbery cases which he allegedly committed at the Glebelands Hostel, mostly at the sports grounds.
