Suspect arrested following viral video showing Pretoria West e-hailing murder
Dashcam footage captured the fatal struggle before an e-hailing driver's body was found in Atteridgeville.
Police have arrested a woman in connection with the brutal murder of an e-hailing driver, who was killed behind the wheel of his vehicle in Pretoria West on Wednesday, 11 February.
The breakthrough follows the circulation of a disturbing dashcam video on social media, which depicted the fatal assault of a man in the driver’s seat. In the footage, the victim is seen struggling as he is attacked simultaneously by a woman in the front passenger seat and a man from behind. The video concludes with the victim’s lifeless body slumped in the vehicle.
In response to the viral footage, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Gauteng assigned a senior detective to confirm the jurisdiction of the crime and ensure the perpetrators were brought to justice, Pretoria Rekord reported.
Breakthrough in the investigation
The Office of the Provincial Commissioner confirmed that a significant breakthrough was made on Thursday (13 February).
The murder reportedly occurred after two suspects, a man and a woman, requested an e-hailing service in Pretoria West. Preliminary investigations suggest the driver was hijacked and murdered inside the car; both the vehicle and the victim’s body were recovered in Atteridgeville later that same day.
SAPS spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed the arrest and noted that the search for the second suspect continues.
“Police have arrested a female suspect. More arrests are imminent as investigations proceed,” Masondo said.
Legal proceedings and warning
Colonel Masondo previously urged the public to stop sharing the graphic video, warning that its circulation could hamper the ongoing investigation and further traumatise the victim’s family.
The arrested suspect is expected to appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 16 February, facing charges of car hijacking and murder.
