South Coast man shot, allegedly by police: Questions remain unanswered

A man identified as Sean Schoeman spent around three weeks in hospital before he died.

South Coast Herald has learnt that Sean Schoeman, the man who was shot, allegedly by police, died in the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital a week ago. Questions about the incident that led to his death remain unanswered, however.

Schoeman (26) posted various disturbing Facebook videos before being shot on August 12. The videos, with captions like ‘murder on my mind’, showed him racing through Southport in a car believed to have been hijacked. His mother was reported to be a passenger.

In an article on the incident at the time, South Coast Herald quoted Glen Preston of Med-Evac saying that when Schoeman failed to stop, police gave chase and Schoeman crashed the car into a gate before being shot in a shootout with the police.

“We treated him for gunshot wounds to the lower part of the leg and to the head before he was transported to hospital by Netcare911,” said Preston.

The newspaper contacted the Ugu District SAPS office for comment but was referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID). A response from IPID is awaited.
