Sleeping girls burnt to death: Man back in Pretoria court tomorrow
Police have offered a reward for information to help them track down another suspect after four people, including two girls, were killed.
A 35-year-old man in the murder of two young girls is expected to appear in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
Tinyiko (7) and Mpfumo (4) Mashaba, were burned to death on June 2 around 19:30 when suspects ran amok in the informal settlement.
The accused is facing a charge of murder, five counts of attempted murder, two counts of arson, and being in the country illegally.
He was arrested in Akasia, north of Pretoria, on June 9, and his last court appearance was last Wednesday.
According to NPA regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, the suspect was remanded in custody, and his case postponed for bail investigations and a legal representative.
The incident
“It is alleged that on June 2, the man and his accomplice who has not been apprehended, went to a tavern in Akasia and the homes of Moshate Forum members and their relatives, and started shooting at them. Afterwards, the two set the tavern and the complainant’s house alight,” said Mahanjana.
Mahanjana explained a woman who was at the tavern was shot and died on the scene. “Five other people were injured and are still in hospital.”
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the police recovered a vehicle that was allegedly used during the commission of this crime.
Masondo said more suspects might be arrested in this case, pending further investigation.
“The assigned team of detectives has been working diligently to apprehend the suspects behind the heinous crime. The search for other suspects is continuing,” added Masondo.
R100K reward, man sought
The Gauteng police offers a R100 000 reward to anyone who can assist with information that can lead to the arrest of another individual alleged to be responsible for the murder of four people, including the two girls.
Masondo said the suspect would face charges of attempted murder and arson.
“It is believed that Dennis Nyatsunga/Ngobeni also known as ‘Shumba’ is originally from Mozambique. He might still be in South Africa and is said to be using a fraudulent passport and asylum seeker papers,” explained Masondo.
Masondo said the wanted suspect is short and dark in complexion.
“The public is advised not to attempt to apprehend the suspect, because he is considered armed and very dangerous.”
