Severe negligence exposed at government-backed Mpumalanga fish farm

During a site inspection, a wheelbarrow filled with dead fish was discovered with inspectors unable to find any live fish in the ponds.

In a shocking revelation, the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) has exposed severe negligence at a government-supported fish farm in Mpumalanga that specialises in Mozambican tilapia.

After gaining access to the farm via a warrant and police escort, NSPCA inspectors found murky ponds with dead fish while a caretaker was feeding the ponds like the fish inside were still alive.

The facility had been granted to the owner by the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Reform, which was allegedly aware of the farm’s deteriorating conditions.

The owner had even sought funding for structural improvements, raising serious concerns about oversight and accountability within the department.
