Search ongoing for missing Sodwana Bay diver

The search for a diver who went missing during a deep-sea technical dive is still underway.

A large-scale search and rescue operation was launched on Tuesday morning after a diver went missing off Sodwana Bay on Monday.

The diver, believed to be from Gauteng, reportedly went missing during a deep-sea technical dive.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), the Police Search and Rescue unit and private vessels are involved in the sea search and a South African Air Force (Saaf) helicopter was deployed from Saaf 15 Squadron to conduct an aerial search.

The NSRI St Lucia Station 40 responded to the call-out just after 15.30 on Monday, launching their new rescue craft.

“The search has extended south to beyond St Lucia, with the hopes that the man surfaced and is adrift at sea,” said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon yesterday.

“There remains no signs of the missing diver and an ongoing search is continuing. All thoughts are with the family of the missing man in this difficult time.”
