Search continues for missing swimmer on KZN North Coast

A man who was initially rescued by lifeguards after getting into difficulty while swimming in uMdloti was swept away by a freak wave minutes later.

Search and recovery operations are stretching into a second day after a swimmer was swept out to sea in uMdloti.

Northglen News reports that members of the SAPS Search & Rescue Unit are looking for a 22-year-old man who is presumed to have drowned yesterday (June 15).

According to Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), Bandile Ntaka was initially rescued by lifeguards after getting into difficulty while swimming at uMdloti when he was swept away by a freak wave minutes later.

“The family and a local councillor arrived at Rusa after learning of the incident, requesting assistance. The R44 helicopter was deployed to assist in locating the body after heavy winds subsided,” he says.

Balram adds that recovery efforts were abandoned at 17:15 yesterday when darkness set in, but have since resumed.
