Search continues as Crocodile River tragedy leaves 2 dead, 1 missing

Specialised rescue teams have intensified efforts for a missing student as investigators work to establish what led to a fatal incident in Mpumalanga.

Police are continuing search and recovery operations after a vehicle plunged into the Crocodile River yesterday (June 7), killing two people and leaving a third still missing, reports Lowvelder.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the woman’s identity has not yet been confirmed and will need to be verified by her next of kin.

Ndubane added that the victims were students who had attended a rugby match. Preliminary cellphone records indicate that they travelled from a local restaurant before plunging into the Crocodile River.

“We will continue the search today, using drones to assist in locating the third victim,” said Captain Pottie Potgieter of the Ehlanzeni Diving Unit.

According to police, the family of the third victim arrived at the scene yesterday and informed officers that their son had reportedly been travelling in the vehicle. They became concerned when he failed to return home and were unable to reach him on his cellphone.

While the cause of the accident remains unknown, a case of culpable homicide has been opened.
