Scholar patrol assistant makes gruesome discovery in Pietermaritzburg

A man was discovered dead when a woman who was helping learners cross a road went to investigate after a man with a bloody knife ran past her.

A Pietermaritzburg scholar patrol assistant was left shaken after witnessing a man with a bloody knife run past her, and later discovering the body of a stabbing victim, near a school in Brixham Road, on Tuesday afternoon.

The woman, who was helping learners cross the road at Dunveria Secondary School, says she ran in fear after seeing the man just metres from the school.

“I saw three men and one had a knife covered in blood. We ran because we thought we were going to be attacked,” she says.

Shortly after, learners told her someone had been stabbed in a nearby pathway leading to Orient Heights. When she went to check, she found the victim lying face down, already dead.

“This has left us horrified.

“This area, especially near the school, is no longer safe,” she says.

She adds that this wasn’t the first crime in the area, mentioning that learners had been robbed earlier this year.

Mountain Rise police spokesperson Warrant Officer Panchael Singh confirmed that a man had been found, with a stab wound in his chest, near the school.

The victim has not been identified yet.

“Police are investigating a murder and no arrests have been made,” Singh says.
