Sandton high-speed chase: 4 suspects arrested

A security officer’s quick response to a suspicious vehicle sparked a shoot-out and a dramatic chase through Sandton.

Four suspects were arrested yesterday (28 November) following a high-speed chase and shoot-out in Sandton.

According to the Beagle Watch managing director, Andre Aiton, the incident began when one of their patrolling officers identified a vehicle believed to have been used in an earlier driveway robbery in Atholl, reports the Sandton Chronicle.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle on Katherine Street when the occupants allegedly opened fire. The officer returned fire, injuring the driver, who then lost control and crashed.

Two suspects who fled on foot toward Grayston Drive were detained by Johannesburg Metro Police Department officers.

A third suspect ran up Katherine Street and, after discarding a firearm, was apprehended by two [Beagle Watch] officers.

Aiton explained that several items were recovered at the scene, including stolen cellphones, a gas pistol, a firearm, and a watch believed to have been taken during the Atholl robbery.

“The injured suspect received medical attention. All four arrests form part of an ongoing investigation, and authorities are still working to confirm the suspects’ possible links to other crimes.”

The police did not respond to requests for comment at the time of publishing.
