Same airport, different decade: Friday’s minor leak is not 2016 flood
Heavy rain in Kempton Park on Friday caused damage to the roof structure at OR Tambo International Airport but it did not delay operations and flights.
An old story regarding flooding at OR Tambo International Airport in 2016 is currently circulating on social media.
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) confirmed that the story is not linked to the recent heavy rainfall experienced on Friday afternoon, reports the Kempton Express.
In an official statement, ACSA said OR Tambo International Airport and the surrounding Kempton Park area experienced an extraordinary downpour, which temporarily overwhelmed the airport’s roof drainage system.
“This resulted in water ingress in certain areas of the terminal building,” said ACSA group spokesperson Ofentse Dijoe.
ACSA confirmed that airport operations were not affected.
“All passengers were processed as scheduled, and no flights were delayed,” he said.
“A specialist contractor is currently assessing the roof structure and will provide airport management with a comprehensive report detailing the extent of the damage, as well as a repair timeline, by today, February 1,” said Dijoe.
The Citizen reported that the airport’s Domestic Terminal B was partly flooded.
Videos received from travellers showed sections of the departures check-in area under water, with a significant volume of water moving across the terminal floor.
The main R21 offramp into the airport precinct was also submerged.
Dijoe said the water had since subsided and that road access to the airport had normalised.
