Salmaan Moerat on Bok captaincy: I thought it was a typo next to my name

Here's what the 66th Springbok captain had to say about his selection to lead the team against Portugal later today.

Salmaan Moerat initially couldn’t believe he was appointed skipper but the giant lock is ready to lead the Springboks for the first time against Portugal on Saturday.

The former SA Schools and Junior Springbok captain will take the next big step in his career when he leads the Springboks out in the historic clash with Portugal in Bloemfontein.

Moerat, who also captains the DHL Stormers, was one of the leading contenders to take over the captaincy from the rested Siya Kolisi yet the 66th Bok skipper admitted the news came as a surprise to him.

“I found out on Monday morning for the first time. Coach Stokke [Mzwandile Stick] announced the team to us,” Moerat said.

“Initially I thought it was a typo next to my name. The ‘c’ was quite small. Then he announced it out loud. I just thought to myself, ‘Wow, what an honour and privilege’.

“What has helped a lot is the fact that I have captained the Stormers and Western Province before. So it’s not really something new.

“What helps as well is that there’s some experience in the lineup this weekend. They’ve really made it so much easier this week. They’ve taken responsibility in their roles.

“For me, it’s just to make sure that everything is running smoothly and to focus on my game.”

Moerat, who comes from a deeply rooted rugby family, said it would be an equally special occasion for them, as they will be in attendance to watch him lead the Springboks out at the Toyota Stadium.

“My father played rugby back in the former SARU days and my uncles played rugby as well, so it’s a huge honour for them and for me to captain the Springboks,” he said.

Moerat admitted that filling Kolisi’s boots was not an easy task, and appreciated the guidance the two-time World Cup winner offered him this week.

“Those are big shoes to fill – Siya is seen as an inspirational captain around the world,” said Moerat.

“The first thing he said to me was congratulations, and he also said it’s a privilege that should not be taken lightly.

“His advice to me was to enjoy the occasion and focus on my game, and the fact that we have so many experienced players in the squad will certainly make my job easier. But I also know that I can call him whenever I need guidance and assistance.”
