Motorists who stop to assist hitch-hikers in the Dundee and Nquthu area are being targeted by armed suspects, with at least two incidents reported this month.

The Northern Natal News reports traffic officers and police in Nquthu have warned that a gang of about four men is operating along roads in the area, luring drivers into stopping before robbing them at gunpoint.

Drivers lured with the promise of cash

According to Philip Mthethwa, a Nquthu Road Traffic Inspectorate official the suspects are often seen standing alongside the road posing as hitch-hikers.

“They promise the driver R100 for a lift,” said Mthethwa.

“Once the vehicle stops, the driver is threatened with a firearm and robbed of personal belongings,” he said.

In one incident, the gang fled after spotting a police patrol vehicle approaching from behind. However, in another case, the situation escalated dramatically.

“The driver was hijacked and thrown into the Buffalo River,” Mthethwa confirmed.

Fortunately, the victim survived the ordeal.

Law enforcement officials have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution and avoid picking up hitch-hikers unless they are personally known to them.

Police have increased patrols in the affected areas as investigations continue.
