Richards Bay CIT guard in custody for theft of cash

A case of theft was reported when a preliminary investigation revealed that a receipt book had been tampered with.

A Richards Bay, KZN, cash-in-transit guard was arrested on Monday by Hawks members from the Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime unit for theft.

Reports reveal that on Thursday, the suspect (33) collected R209 500 from one of the company’s clients in Ulundi and failed to hand over the money to the cash volt.

When the client enquired about the collected money, an internal investigation was conducted.

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo says a preliminary investigation revealed that the receipt book had been tampered with, and a case of theft was reported at Richards Bay Police Station.

“The case docket was handed over to the Hawks for investigation and a suspect was identified. A search warrant was obtained and executed on Monday. During the search of the suspect’s residence, R26 000 was found.

“He was placed under arrest and charged accordingly. He is expected to appear in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court soon,” says Mhlongo.
