Reiger Park mass shooting: No one charged months after the tragedy
A suspect arrested shortly after the Boksburg shooting has since been released due to insufficient evidence.
Months after the deadly mass shooting that claimed six lives and rocked the Reiger Park community on November 1, no arrests have yet been made, leaving families and residents still waiting for justice.
According to Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the case remains under investigation and there have been no new developments.
The shootings, believed to be gang-related, occurred at about 18:50 across several streets in the area, including William, Regent and Martin du Preez streets and Stanbury Road.
Three people were injured when, according to information from the police, two vehicles (silver and black Volkswagen Polos) drove into the area and started shooting at groups of people.
The following victims were killed in the shooting:
- Ruth Faith Marais,
- Patricia Niewenhuys,
- Danielle Barlow,
- Nomasonto Nkosi,
- Royden Joseph,
- Mapaso Midian.
Investigation
While a 23-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after the incident, Nevhuhulwi confirmed that he was later released due to insufficient evidence to proceed with a prosecution.
She further said that an 18-year-old was also brought in for questioning but was reportedly not charged.
The lack of arrests has fuelled anger and frustration among community members, who have voiced concerns that no one has yet been held accountable months after the horrific event.
Police appeal
Police have appealed to the public to assist with the investigation.
Nevhuhulwi urged residents to report any criminal activity or information relating to the suspects, even anonymously, via the Crime Stop Line on 08600 10111 or through the MySAPSApp.
