Psychologist among victims in The Crags double murder
A couple killed on their farm near Plettenberg Bay have been identified and police are appealing to anyone with information about the murders to come forward.
One of the victims of a double murder in The Crags on Wednesday has been named by a friend as prominent Plettenberg Bay psychologist Jane Luck, who practised in the area, reports Knysna-Plett Herald.
Luck (71) and her husband Rolf (77) were found murdered in their home after security personnel traced the numberplate of their stolen Mercedes-Benz back to their farm at Loerie Glen, near the N2 in The Crags.
A farm worker first reported the suspicious vehicle and suspect.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies confirmed in a statement that a 34-year-old suspect from The Crags has been arrested and is currently detained in Uniondale.
He is expected to appear in court once formally charged.
A friend has described the death of the Lucks as a ‘terrible shock’.
“She was a lovely woman who specialised in trauma counselling and bereavement. She was also an avid environmentalist and protector of nature and would not stand back from expressing her views strongly,” said the friend.
‘Devastating’
The deaths were devastating for the community, said the friend, who described Jane Luck as a formidable person.
She was chairperson of the Redford Conservancy in the Crags and was a ‘knowledgeable and passionate’ person.
“It is a huge loss,” said the friend.
‘Psychology Today’
Jane Luck described herself on the Psychology Today web page: “I am a registered clinical psychologist with many years experience working with children, teenagers, adults and couples. I also have a great deal of experience working with families and groups. I have facilitated groups where drugs and/or alcohol addiction is a familial problem for many years.”
“I have also worked with mood disorders such as depression and bipolar. My doctoral thesis was on the mediating effect of art therapy for the treatment of trauma and bereavement, as I believe in the benefits of working with many different modalities in psychotherapy.”
Police
Spies, in a follow-up request to the police about the identities of the murdered couple, said: “The police is not at liberty to confirm or divulge the particulars of the deceased at this stage.”
“This is an ongoing police investigation. The content of the media release is the only information which the police is can reveal at this stage. The motive for the attack remains the subject of further investigation,” he said.
Spies asked that anyone with additional information that could assist with the investigation, contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile app MySAPS.
