The Senteeko Dam wall remains in a critical state, with engineers warning that a total collapse is imminent.

Lowvelder reports that the De Kaap Irrigation Board has issued an urgent evacuation order for residents and businesses located downstream of the dam.

According to the board, technical teams worked through the night under difficult conditions to widen and deepen emergency trenches.

The goal is to facilitate a faster, controlled release of water to reduce pressure on the structural integrity of the wall.

However, the outflow remains dangerously slow due to the massive volume of water in the reservoir.

Dam is key to local agriculture

The Senteeko Dam has long been a cornerstone of the agricultural economy in the Barberton area.

Originally constructed to support the De Kaap Valley’s thriving agricultural sector, the dam was designed primarily for irrigation.

For decades, it has provided a steady water supply to tobacco, citrus and macadamia nut farmers, transforming the region into a highly productive agricultural hub.

Managed by the De Kaap Irrigation Board, the dam serves as a critical buffer during South Africa’s dry seasons.

By capturing run-off from the surrounding mountains, it helps ensure the valley remains fertile even when rainfall is scarce.
