Polokwane traffic officers hailed for helping during roadside birth
Five traffic officers in Limpopo helped ensure a mother and her newborn received urgent medical care after an emergency birth this morning.
Five Limpopo traffic officers are being hailed for their swift response and compassion after assisting a mother who went into labour beneath a bridge and ensuring both she and her newborn baby received urgent medical care.
According to Polokwane Review, Polokwane Municipality commended traffic officers Sylvia Moganedi, Nthabiseng Ngoepe, Gerhald de Waal, Kgaugelo Godfrey Mphago and Louis Mamabolo for their actions after they discovered the woman in the process of giving birth during the course of their duties this morning (June 21).
According to the municipality, the officers immediately stepped in to assist when they realised the mother required urgent help.
They ensured that both the woman and her newborn baby were safely transported for medical treatment.
Mother and baby in stable condition
The mother and child are currently receiving care at Rethabile Clinic and are reported to be in a stable condition.
The municipality praised the officers for demonstrating compassion and professionalism in a situation where every second counted.
“Rather than passing by, the officers responded with urgency and care, helping to protect two lives at a critical moment,” the municipality said.
The incident has drawn widespread praise as an example of public servants going beyond their normal responsibilities to assist residents in need.
The municipality said the officers’ actions embodied the principles of Batho Pele by placing the needs and well-being of people first.
Going beyond the call of duty
While traffic officers are often associated with road safety and law enforcement, the municipality noted that the incident highlighted the broader role public servants play in supporting and protecting communities.
For officers Moganedi, Ngoepe, de Waal, Mphago and Mamabolo, what began as a routine day on duty became a life-changing moment for a mother and her child, and a reminder that acts of kindness and humanity can make all the difference when they are needed most.
