Limpopo police officer attacked with slasher blade, suspect killed

A domestic violence dispute ended in tragedy when a man was shot dead and a law enforcement officer was seriously injured.

A Mankweng, Limpopo, police officer is receiving medical attention after sustaining serious injuries while attending to a domestic dispute on Monday.

Officers from the Mankweng Police Station were dispatched to a house after a reported domestic dispute in Ga-Nchechane village, says police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.

He explains that when the officers arrived, the situation was volatile and a 46-year-old hostile man was armed with a slasher blade and hammer.

“While attempting to defuse the situation, the suspect [allegedly] attacked the responding officers, resulting in one officer sustaining multiple injuries.

“The suspect continued to assault the officer, who was lying on the ground, and disarmed him,” Ledwaba says.

Despite the danger, another officer acted swiftly to neutralise the threat posed by the armed suspect, resulting in the suspect being shot dead.

“One of the officers sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical attention. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has been informed of the incident and investigations are underway,” says Ledwaba.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident and urged people to refrain from violent behaviour when faced with domestic-related challenges.

“We extend our thoughts and prayers to the injured officer and wish him a speedy recovery,” Hadebe says.
