Police seize counterfeit goods worth R27m in Durban

A businessman was arrested during a raid in Felix Dlamini Road after counterfeit goods and 14 individuals in contravention of the Immigration Act (13 of 2002) were found.

Durban Metrol Police Services participated in a large-scale search and seizure operation in Sydenham yesterday, reports the Berea Mail.

Metro police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu gave details of the operation.

“At premises on Felix Dlamini Road, members discovered a business operating with non-compliant and suspected contraband goods. Fourteen individuals found to be in contravention of the Immigration Act [13 of 2002] were detained for further processing, along with the employer,” said Zungu.

Zungu added that over 14 million cellphone accessories were seized with an estimated value of recovered goods at R27m.

“The goods were handed over to customs for further investigation and analysis,” she said.

“Additional charges under the Customs and Excise Act [91 of 1964] and Counterfeit Goods Act [37 of 1997] were effected. The employer was also arrested for employing illegal immigrants,” added Zungu.

“This operation demonstrates strong collaboration between metro police and various national and provincial law enforcement agencies in disrupting illicit trade networks that negatively impact the economy and legitimate businesses,” she said.
