Police raid alleged illegal call centre in uMhlanga

Authorities have swooped on a Durban property following a months-long investigation into a suspected fraudulent travel business operating under a false name.

Police have raided a property in uMhlanga where an alleged illegal holiday sales call centre is being operated, following a months-long crime intelligence investigation, reports Northglen News.

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) eThekwini District, together with the Metro Police Special Operations Directorate and the SAPS Tactical Response Team (TRT), entered the premises today.

A source close to Northglen News said the business had allegedly been operating on Hilken Drive under the guise of a holiday sales company called Emerald Sun, defrauding clients of significant sums of money.

When Northglen News visited the company’s website, the address listed belongs to a private venue on Old North Coast Road.

There are also 36 holiday properties located along the lower South Coast, between Port Shepstone and Port Edward, available for clients to book through the website.

The business owners were also taken into custody, while a number of employees are being questioned. A luxury car was also confiscated during the operation.

Several suspects have been arrested at the scene, including foreign nationals.

Official comment from SAPS was not immediately available at the time of publication.

*This article has been amended twice. It was not the property owners who were taken into custody, as previously reported, but the owners of the business operating from the premises. It was previously updated to reflect that Emerald Sun could not be reached for comment.
