Police investigating Pretoria doctor’s death

An inquest has been opened after a doctor who had multiple injuries died on a street outside his apartment building.

Police have opened an inquest after a man (31) died outside a building on the corner of Roper and Brooks streets in Brooklyn, east of Pretoria, on Thursday.

According to Old East Safety Forum spokesperson Jarad Frimmel, responders acted on information received via a call from bystanders who reported a disturbance at an apartment building in Brooklyn.

“Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered a man in his 30s, identified as a doctor from a nearby hospital, in critical condition from multiple injuries,” Frimmel says.

He says despite immediate advanced life-support efforts, the man died at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding his death are not known.

“The police are investigating the matter to determine the cause and any potential criminal involvement.”

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk says emergency services and police were contacted to attend to the scene.

Police officers went to the deceased’s apartment and found the door locked. It was forced open to gain entry, says Van Dyk.

The apartment was empty and in disarray.

“During the assessment and search of the apartment, a written note was discovered, which has been submitted as evidence and will form part of the investigation,” says Van Dyk.

When the investigation is complete, the note will be given to a magistrate for finalisation and a decision on the case, he adds.
