Police confiscate suspected drugs worth R4.2m in Komatipoort

Law enforcement officials found what is believed to be crystal meth in a taxi travelling from Mozambique to South Africa.

A 36-year-old Mozambican national was arrested at the Lebombo Border in Komatipoort, Mpumalanga, on Friday for possession of suspected crystal meth with an estimated street value of more than R4.2m.

According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, border police conducted a routine search of a white Toyota minibus taxi and discovered a hidden compartment inside the vehicle.

The suspected drugs were found hidden inside the compartment, says Mdhluli.

“The consignment weighed approximately 17kg.”

The substance was confiscated by the police for further investigation, and the man was charged with illegal possession of suspected drugs.

The suspect was due to appear in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court yesterday. At the time of publishing, the outcome of his court appearance was not yet known.
