Pensioner shot, dog killed while trying to defend owner in brazen KZN attack
Kai, a dog who tried to protect her owner, was fatally shot during an attempted home invasion.
A 63-year-old Crossmoor, KZN, man is in critical condition after he and his dog were shot during a violent attempted home invasion yesterday.
Rising Sun reports that Captain Cheryl Pillay, spokesperson for Chatsworth SAPS, says the man had just parked his car and was closing his driveway gate when he was ambushed by an armed gang.
He tried to flee but was shot multiple times. His dog Kai, who attempted to protect him, was also shot and later died from her injuries.
The victim was rushed to a local hospital where he is fighting for his life.

Chatsworth police have opened a case of attempted murder and are investigating the incident.
Private security company PT Alarms, which responded to the scene, confirmed in a Facebook post that the suspects tried to force their way into the man’s home. They described the attack as ruthless.
Despite being taken to a veterinary facility, Kai sadly did not survive.
