Over 900 motorists arrested for drunk driving during Easter crackdown
Authorities report a sharp increase in drunk driving arrests and impounded vehicles during the long weekend.
Motorists have been urged to take extra caution following a sharp rise in drunk driving arrests over the Easter long weekend, with authorities warning that reckless behaviour continues to put lives at risk on South Africa’s roads.
Bloemfontein Courant reports that law enforcement operations were intensified across the country, resulting in hundreds of arrests and the impoundment of vehicles as officials worked to curb dangerous driving.
Drunk driving arrests surge
According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), arrests related to driving under the influence of alcohol increased by 39%, with 934 motorists detained between Thursday and Saturday, 263 more than during the same period last year.
The corporation also noted a 31.6% rise in impounded vehicles, with 1 215 vehicles seized compared to 923 previously, highlighting ongoing concerns around illegal transport operations and permit violations.
“This means there were more vehicles transporting members without permits or in violation of permit conditions as people tried to make a quick buck,” a statement by the RTMC reads.
More vehicles taken off the road
Additionally, 688 vehicles were discontinued.
“Law enforcement officers will continue to monitor traffic on all the national and alternative routes as the long weekend come to an end,” the statement concludes.
