Officer’s bail bid postponed in Port Shepstone murder case

Officer Darren Govender’s bail application in his premeditated murder case was postponed in the Port Shepstone District Court.

The bail application for officer Darren Govender, who faces a schedule six charge of premeditated murder, was yesterday postponed to next Wednesday in the Port Shepstone District Court.

According to South Coast Herald, the magistrate is Vuyokazi Diza.

Dressed in a smart white long-sleeve shirt and jeans, Govender (37), an assistant superintendent law enforcement officer for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, appeared in court, represented by Attorney Sharlene Govender and Advocate Wesley Matthews.

He also faces charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and reckless use of a firearm in public.

Govender pleaded not guilty and remains in custody.

He handed himself over to police on February 12 after the incident in which businessman Brad Hughes (54) was shot and killed at a pub in Shelly Beach.
