NWU student killed, boyfriend hangs himself

A student of the Vanderbijlpark campus was killed, allegedly by her boyfriend who reportedly confessed to the killing in his suicide note.

A dark cloud continues to hover above North-West University in Vanderbijlpark.

The campus has been shaken by shocking news involving the death of a fourth-year student in what appears to be a brutal murder.

Mamohlotsi Nchabeleng (22) was killed, allegedly by her boyfriend.

According to the university, Nchabeleng’s body was discovered in her room at a private residence on Monday.

Professor Sibusiso Chalufu, the acting executive director of student life and deputy vice-chancellor at the campus, stated: “This followed the discovery of the body of the deceased boyfriend (not an NWU student) along with a note at his home in Sharpeville.”

Chalufu added that the university is providing counselling to Nchabeleng’s family and affected students.

“We urge all affected students and staff to visit the Student Counselling and Development Centre at building 14, split level 3,” he said.

Vanderbijlpark police spokesperson Sergeant Sabelo Sigcu confirmed the incident.

“A case of murder has been opened. It is alleged that the family of the deceased informed the police after their son was found hanging at his home in Sharpeville. A suicide note was discovered near the deceased’s body, in which he claimed to have killed his girlfriend who was staying at the residence, and that this was his reason for taking his own life.

“Upon arrival at the mentioned location, as indicated in the suicide note, police found the woman in her bed. Paramedics were called to the scene and declared her deceased,” added Sigcu.
