Newcastle CPF murder case: 2 acquitted, remaining accused back in court
Two former CPF members have been acquitted in a Newcastle murder case after the court found no evidence linking them to the killing.
Two of the four former Newcastle Community Policing Forum (CPF) members charged with murder were acquitted when the high-profile trial resumed before Magistrate Sibisi today. The case has held the town’s attention for months.
Two accused acquitted
According to the Newcastle Advertiser, Mahomed Ashraf and Yaseen Mohamed were released after the court found no evidence linking them to the death of 26-year-old Khulekani Hlatshwayo, who was killed on December 24, 2022.
Their defence attorneys, Ravindra Maniklall and Zubair Chothia, applied for a discharge last Monday, arguing that the state had failed to present a sufficient case. The court agreed.
Trial continues for remaining accused
While Ashraf and Mohamed left the courtroom relieved, the two remaining accused, Ismaeel Dhalech and Ebrahim Adams, will still stand trial on the murder charge.
Their case is scheduled to continue today and on Monday.
