N3 in Durban closed due to acid leak

People were urged to stay away from the scene as hydrochloric acid spilled onto the highway in Durban.

The N3 in Durban has been closed in both directions near the Spaghetti Junction due to a hydrochloric acid spillage.

Garrith Jamieson, ALS Paramedics director, who was at scene on Friday morning, said two police officers were being treated.

“Just after 07:00, there was a chemical spillage, believed to be hydrochloric acid. The freeway has been closed in both directions.

“We are seeing two policemen who have been injured as well as other people due to the gaseous exchange. The N3 has closed both bounds,” he said.

He added that the Durban Fire Department was on scene and helping to deal with the issue.

Sindikangidi Msimanga, the Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson, said specialists were at the scene.

“We are not sure how long it will take to clean up because it is not just a regular leak.

“It is an active scene and we have specialists on the scene. The road is still closed. We are urging people to stay away from the scene and to listen to instructions from RTI and the specialists,” she said.
