Murdered woman transported in wheelbarrow: Son arrested in Limpopo

Community members attacked an alleged murderer who was pushing his dead mother’s body in a wheelbarrow.

A 42-year-old man will soon appear before the Tiyani Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder, following his arrest yesterday.

The man was arrested in Mamaila village in Sekgosese, Limpopo, for allegedly killing his 69-year-old mother and pushing her dead body in a wheelbarrow.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the suspect’s neighbours allegedly heard him arguing with and insulting his mother before the crime.

“The suspect [allegedly] called one of his neighbours to see what he was carrying in the wheelbarrow. Upon checking, it was discovered that it was his mother’s lifeless body,” says Ledwaba.

The community then allegedly mobilised and attacked the suspect before police were notified.

“Police found the victim’s body wrapped in a blanket in a steel bath in the wheelbarrow.

“Emergency services were summoned to the scene, where the woman was certified dead” says Ledwaba.

Ledwaba says police rescued the male victim from the hands of the community. He was rushed to hospital where he was arrested and will remain under police guard.

“The circumstances surrounding the murder are being investigated.”

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the arrest and once again warned against vigilantism and taking the law into one’s own hands.

“Communities should refrain from engaging in violence when faced with domestic challenges and rather resolve issues amicably. Any differences should be addressed within the confines of the law,” she says.
