Mother killed in alleged hit-and-run in Gauteng

Determined Sebokeng residents used a 10-ton truck to track down a motorist who allegedly knocked down and killed a woman while she waited for her child to return from school.

A normal day turned into a tragedy when a 45-year-old woman was knocked down and killed by a speeding vehicle while waiting for her child, reports the Sedibeng Ster.

The fatal accident happened on Wessels Mota Street in Zone 10, Ext 3, on Friday afternoon.

According to witnesses, the driver of a white Toyota Legend 45 bakkie was racing and overtaking vehicles when he lost control of the vehicle.

The victim was standing on the side of the road at around 15:00, reportedly waiting for her child to arrive home on school transport. She was hit with such force that she died on the scene.

The bakkie eventually crashed into a nearby wall. As police and paramedics arrived, scores of bystanders braved the rain as they gathered to mourn the tragic loss.

Immediately after the crash, the driver allegedly fled the scene on foot, running through bushes toward the Sebokeng Testing Station construction site.

Determined residents jumped onto a 10-ton truck to track him down. They eventually found the man hiding inside a shop in Zone 7.

Speaking to the Sedibeng Ster, in anonymity, a motorist described how she narrowly avoided the crash herself.

“The man was overtaking everyone. I even shifted from the road and parked on the sidewalk before the incident happened, because I felt he was putting our lives in danger. Moments after I stopped, I saw him lose control and hit the woman,” said the motorist.

Sebokeng police spokesperson Nthabiseng Mokhachane confirmed the incident.

“A case of culpable homicide has been opened and investigations are ongoing,” she said.
