More snow could hit parts of South Africa soon – here is the early forecast

After unprecedented snowstorms last weekend, early predictions show that even more snow could hit South Africa over the coming weekend.

According to Vox Weather, a strong cold front is expected to hit the south-western Cape on Saturday, bringing colder temperatures and rainfall to the western and central parts of South Africa.

Snow is expected to fall over the following areas from Sunday evening into Monday:

• The Matroosberg and Cederberg mountains
• The mountains between the Western, Northern and Eastern Cape
• The northern high grounds of the Eastern Cape
• The southern Drakensberg
• Lesotho and the bordering areas between Lesotho and KZN

It is important to note that the forecast for snowfall is still early and can change substantially. The public is advised to keep an eye on warnings issued by the South African Weather Service to avoid being trapped in heavy snowfall.

Pretoria Rekord reports the latest forecast comes after at least two people died of hypothermia after being trapped in the snow on the N3 in the KZN Midlands.

Hundreds of other motorists were left stranded for days on this route.

Snowstorms hit the eastern part of the country on Friday, disrupting several major routes, including the N3 highway linking Johannesburg to Durban, one of the hardest-hit areas.

Authorities reported traffic was backed up for about 30km early on Sunday, nearly two days after the first vehicles were stranded.
