Monkeypox death toll rises to 3 as cases surge to 16

Sixteen people have been infected with monkeypox since May.

A 40-year-old man from Ladysmith in KZN has become the latest victim of the monkeypox outbreak in South Africa, bringing the death toll to three.

The Department of Health confirmed the latest death and three additional cases, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 16 since the outbreak in May.

The latest cases involve a 40-year-old man who presented with smallpox-like symptoms, including a rash all over his body. He passed away at home and did not seek medical attention.

Two additional cases have been confirmed in Gauteng – two men, aged 43 and 29, who both presented with symptoms indicative of the disease.

Of the 16 infections, eight cases are from KZN, seven from Gauteng, and one from the Western Cape. Those infected are men, aged between 23 and 43.

The Department of Health has embarked on health education drive with funeral parlours to generate awareness on how to handle the remains of suspected and confirmed monkeypox cases. It is also working to secure more treatment, including vaccines.

Monkeypox is an infectious disease and can be transmitted through contact with the virus from an animal, human or materials contaminated with the virus. It can cause a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes and a fever.

Those with symptoms are urged to go to their nearest healthcare facility immediately for screening and diagnosis, and to not self-diagnose or use over-the-counter medication.

The department has reassured the public that monkeypox is preventable and manageable, and treatment for mild and severe cases is available.
