Microlight crash in Plettenberg Bay leaves pilot with broken leg

A pilot broke his leg after his microlight crashed on landing at Plettenberg Bay airport, reportedly due to pilot error.

A local pilot suffered a broken leg after his microlight aircraft crashed on landing at Plettenberg Bay airport at 19:10 on Saturday.

Knysna-Plett Herald reports that, according to a press release by Bitou Municipality, which manages the airport, the pilot was taken to hospital by ambulance for medical care.

Incident reported

“The incident has been reported to the South African Civil Aviation Authority,” read the statement. “We are waiting for more instructions about the removal of the microlight from the site. The municipality notes with regret that this unfortunate incident is alleged to have been the result of a pilot error.”

About the aircraft

The Aquilla microlight is a popular South African-made ultralight, open-cockpit aircraft. It is essentially a powered hang glider known for its freedom of flight, and referred to as the ‘motorbike of the sky’.
