Man missing after being swept into sea while gathering bait near George

Emergency services are conducting an extensive search for a 35-year-old George man who was swept into the ocean while collecting fishing bait.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Station 23 in Wilderness and other emergency services are continuing an extensive search for a 35-year-old man from Thembalethu, George, who was swept off the rocks by waves while gathering fishing bait.

According to the NSRI Wilderness’ station commander, Jonathan Britton, reports came in on Monday afternoon that a local man had been swept into the sea along the coastline near Thembalethu while in the company of some friends.

George Herald reports NSRI Wilderness rescue swimmers and shore crew were dispatched to the scene, as well as the police, the Western Cape Government Health’s EMS rescue squad, the George Fire and Rescue Services and the SAPS Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS).

The NSRI rescue craft, Oscar’s Rescuer, was launched on the Gwaiing River, while V’s Rescuer was deployed from Herolds Bay. A rescue craft from the George Fire and Rescue Services was also launched. All vessels conducted extensive search operations offshore and along the coastline.

In addition, the EMS Metro Control sent the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter to assist with aerial search efforts.

Despite an extensive air, sea and shoreline search, no trace of the missing man has been found. The police divers are continuing with ongoing search operations.

The NSRI has urged the public to exercise extreme caution along the coastline, particularly during rough sea conditions.
