Man expected in Bloemfontein court after fatal dog attack

A man was arrested after a young woman was mauled to death by American pit bull terriers at the Namibia Square, Mangaung.

After the brutal and fatal attack of a 28-year-old victim by four American pit bull terriers in the Free State, the police arrested a man in connection with an offence under the Animal Matters Amendment Act 40 of 1993.

According to local police spokesperson Thabo Covane, investigators found the man at his house at around 21:00 last night.

“He will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Thursday,” adds Covane.

Bloemfontein Courant previously reported that a young woman was attacked and killed in Namibia Square, Mangaung.

According to Covane, a case of culpable homicide was opened at the Mangaung Police Station at around 15:00 on Monday after police received a report about a female who was attacked by four dogs near Bloemfontein.

“The police rushed to the scene and found the 28-year-old victim lying on the ground, severely bitten by the dogs. The injuries were mostly on the lower parts of the body. Members at the scene had to put down three of the dogs, while the other was taken to safety with its puppies by the local SPCA,” explains Covane.

He adds EMS personnel declared the 28-year-old victim dead on the scene.
