Man dead, 2 critical after Tshwane ATM bombing

Fifteen gunmen, who opened fire on petrol station workers without warning, made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

An ATM bombing at the Engen garage on Marundi Street in Olievenhoutbosch, Tshwane, resulted in the tragic death of one person and left two others critically injured yesterday morning.

The incident, which occurred around 03:40, involved a group of about 15 gunmen.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan Van Dyk says the perpetrators, carrying handguns and rifles, split into groups when they arrived at the garage, with two groups positioned on the southern and northern sides.

Van Dyk says without warning, the suspects began firing indiscriminately at workers and community members, creating a scene of fear and chaos.

“The rapid gunfire left two victims sprawled in separate streets away from the garage.

“Among the victims was a 34-year-old man, who was a passenger in a red Toyota Hilux.”

He says as the vehicle passed the scene, it came under fire, and the driver rushed the victim to Raslouw Private Hospital.

“Unfortunately, despite urgent medical attention, the man was declared dead upon arrival.

“Two other victims, aged 24 and 29, sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the attack.

“They were transported by ambulance to Kalafong Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.”

Van Dyk says the shooters made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the shooters can visit their nearest police station or contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
