Man arrested for double killing in The Crags
Police traced a speeding vehicle to a farm near Plettenberg Bay, where an elderly couple was found murdered.
Plettenberg Bay detectives are investigating the double murder of an elderly couple on a farm in Glen Loerie, The Crags yesterday, reports the Knysna-Plett Herald.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies, the murdered couple were found, after a speeding vehicle’s registration number led authorities to the couple’s address.
The Mercedes-Benz was captured by a license plate recognition camera travelling at high speed along the R339, in the direction of Uniondale, at about 18:50.
“The vehicle was subsequently flagged on a local security WhatsApp group. Police members responded to the registered address linked to the vehicle, where they discovered the bodies of a 71-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man. Both victims had sustained multiple injuries,” said Spies.
He said the identified vehicle was pursued in a co-ordinated effort between police and community safety structures.
“The vehicle overturned near Uniondale, where the driver fled the scene on foot. The suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter,” he added.
Crime scene experts processed both scenes as part of the ongoing investigation.
A 34-year-old suspect from The Crags has since been arrested and is currently being detained in Uniondale.
“He is expected to appear in court once formally charged. The motive for the attack remains the subject of further investigation,” Spies said.
He asked anyone who can provide additional information that could assist with the investigation to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile appl MySAPS.
The Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association extended a special word of gratitude to the farm worker who reported the suspicious vehicle and informed them that the suspect was linked to the Avontuur Farm Watch Zibar Security.
They also thanked security structures that were involved in the capture of the suspect – the Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association, Avontuur Farm Watch, Zibar Security, PBCPA Security group, Plettenberg Bay Farm Watch, Kwanokuthula Farm Watch, Navic operators, Plettenberg Bay Police, Plettenberg Bay Reservists and Uniondale Police.
